The book is totally, completely and delightfully amazing. Seriously, it’s one of those issues that makes me, a jaded comic book reader my whole life, say, “Oh, yeah, THAT’S why I love comics.”
The story of this book follows Rocket on a quest, and it’s structured so beautifully, with each objective leading to the next leading to a treasure. It’s a done-in-one adventure, and everything about it works perfectly. While the story seems simple, that simplicity comes from it being so brilliantly plotted and inventive, and the end result is a story manages to be delightful and fun and moving and innovative. Young and Parker, along with Beaulieu and Eckleberry, deliver the kind of book that you can hand to anyone and say this here is why comics are great. It’s not Watchmen or Dark Knight or Maus, but it’s perfect comic book storytelling, and it’s fun from cover to cover.
Look, it’s a perfect little issue. Just go buy it. I’m giving it a perfect score, what more can I say?
Score: 10
