Green Arrow #36 Review

The new run of Green Arrow started off quite favorably with a new spin that fans of the Arrow television show will find familiar. Andrew Kreisberg and Ben Sokolowski, while definitely pulling a lot of inspiration from that show, the new creative team also managed to pull in elements of the comic book character’s history by reintroducing former Speedy, Mia Dearden. Now with their second issue, the creative team proves this new approach works with a more lighthearted tone, engaging action sequences, and a new and interesting supporting cast. That said, a slightly cartoonish villain may just be the only thing holding this book back.

Issue #2 shows just how quickly a good supporting cast can begin to propel a storyline forward. Kreisberg and Sokolowski have brought in two brand new (to the New 52) characters in Felicity and Mia, and manage to bring everyone together with quick and clever dialogue and a central plot that’s packed with enough action to keep things moving along at a fast pace. This all leads to the new tone that is further established here as fresh, lighthearted, and energetic, but one that stays true to what’s been previously established for Green Arrow in the New 52. The only downfall in the story so far is a slightly cartoony antagonist. While his plans are certainly villainous, and while he’s no colorfully costumed foe, his motivations come off here as one-dimensional and exaggerated.
